About Us

The skin is the largest organ of the body and an important barrier for preventing the invasion of pathogens, the unintentional uptake of external substances and the uncontrolled loss of water and solutes. The barrier function of the skin is principally fulfilled by the epidermis and the product of its terminal differentiation, the horny layer. Detailed knowledge about epidermal barrier function is important for the understanding and treatment of skin diseases as well as for cosmetics and biotechnological applications.

E2BRN is a network and meeting point for scientists from European countries interested in a variety of aspects of epidermal barrier function. We aim to provide a forum for exchange of knowledge, technology, ex vivo and in vivo epidermal barrier models, and other aspects of epidermal barrier research to facilitate collaborations and innovations.

A Brief History of the E2BRN

The European Epidermal Barrier Research Network (E2BRN) has its roots in a local interest group that first convened in 2002 in Hamburg. Recognizing the growing importance of skin barrier research, the network quickly gained momentum and was officially recognized as an ESDR satellite meeting in 2003.

Since then, E2BRN has evolved into a dynamic platform for collaboration and innovation in epidermal barrier science. The network has hosted a series of independent and joint meetings over the years, including notable gatherings in Boussen (2008), Toulouse (2018), and Edinburgh (2023). In addition, E2BRN contributed to the broader scientific dialogue as part of the IID meeting in Edinburgh in 2013.

With the Antwerp meeting marking the 22nd official gathering of E2BRN, the network continues to grow to foster scientific exchange, build community, and advance our understanding of the epidermal barrier.
